Earth Science Division Highlights for week ending May 16, 2007

Steve Dunagan presents UAS paper at AIAA meetings.
On May 10, Dr. Steve Dunagan presented a paper entitled "UAS Enabled Communications for Tactical Firefighting" at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Infotech@Aerospace 2007 Conference in Rohnert Park CA. Co-authors included Jim Eilers and Brad Lobitz of the Earth Science Division and Tom Zajkowski of the Forest Service Remote Sensing applications Center staff. The paper described voice relay communications technology that will be transferred to the Forest Service as a deliverable of the Wildfire Research and Applications Project (PI Vince Ambrosia). This technology also contributes to NASA's requirements for sensor web capability. Other interesting themes advanced at the conference included unpiloted aerial systems (UAS) flight control technology tuned for specific sensor requirements, and advances in the certification processes and operating standards that will enable UAS operations in the National airspace. DEVELOP students present papers at ASPRS meetings.
The American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) held its annual meeting in Tampa, Florida the week of May 7. An oral presentation was given by Matthew Voss, a graduate student at the University of Northern Iowa, entitled, "Utilizing MODIS LAI to Identify Vegetative Anomalies in Yosemite National Park". Voss was the team lead for seven DEVELOP interns during the summer of 2006 who studied post-fire and insect infested vegetation the park. A second paper was presented by Charles Brigham entitled, " Object-Oriented Analysis of Sea Ice Fragmentation Using SAR Imagery to Determine Pacific Walrus Habitat ." Brigham, now with the United Nations, was the DEVELOP team lead for the five students who coupled SAR data and walrus census information to help determine the kinds of ice walrus use. Both papers will appear in the ASPRS proceedings. Co-authors for the papers were Cindy Schmidt, San Jose State University/SGE, who also attended the meetings, and Dr. Jay Skiles, SGE. DEVELOP is funded through the Human Capital Development element of the Applied Science Program, Earth Science Division in the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters. Philip Russell presents two papers at Mexico meeting.
Dr. Phil Russell (SGG) presented the following papers at the Second MILAGRO (Megacity Imitative: Local and Global Research Observations) Science Conference, May 15-18, in Mexico City, Mexico.

"An overview of J-31 aircraft measurements in the Megacity Initiative–Local and Global Research Observations (MILAGRO) experiment" with Russell as first author and 22 other authors. The second paper was entitled, "Comparison of airborne sunphotometer and satellite sensor retrievals of aerosol optical depth during MILAGRO/INTEX-B" with Jens Redemann as the first author and 12 other authors. (POC: Philip Russell, 4-5404, Philip.B.Russell@nasa.gov)
