Earth Science Division Highlights for week ending August 8, 2007

*Earth Science Project Office Team meet Costa Rican President.
Mike Gaunce and Marilyn Vasquez (ESPO) were pleased to meet Oscar Arias, the President of Costa Rica, when he toured the Presidential Hangar in Alajuela, Costa Rica, which is the operations base for Tropical Composition, Cloud and Climate Coupling (TC-4) Mission.

President Oscar Arias (center) is flanked by Marilyn Vasquez (to his right) and Mike Gaunce (to Pres. Arias' left).

President Arias made an informal inspection of the facility prior to the Media Day event, July 27. NASA's TC4 is a field campaign to tackle challenging questions about Earth's ozone layer and climate using coordinated observations from satellites and high-flying NASA airplanes. For more information on TC-4, please visit the mission's website at: http://www.espo.nasa.gov/tc4/ (POC: Mike Gaunce, mgaunce@mail.arc.nasa.gov , 4-1266)

Director Fryberger visits Code SG .
Dr. Teresa Fryberger, the Director of the Applied Sciences Program in the Earth Science Division at NASA HQ, visited Ames the week of July 30.   Accompanying her were John Haynes, Program Manager for public health, aviation and coastal management in the Applied Sciences Program, and Dr. Frank Lindsay with the Data Management group in the Earth Science Division.    The three attended a workshop on the Google/NASA Ames partnership, July 30-31, organized by Matt Hancher (Code TN).  Dr. Fryberger delivered a presentation describing the objectives of NASA Earth Science, especially the Applied Sciences Program, and potential points of collaboration between NASA and Google.   Dr. Fryberger visited Ames' Earth Science Division, July 31-Aug. 1.  She received a briefing on Division activities from Division Chief Steve Hipskind and discussed current work and potential future activities with division principal investigators.  She had the opportunity to meet and talk to the students in the DEVELOP program, and she completed her time in the Division with a tour of the SIERRA UAS.   Upon departure, Dr. Fryberger expressed her appreciation for the work of the Division and the potential for increased support for research and applied science objectives of NASA by the Division. Phil Russell co-chairs Gordon Conference .
Phil Russell (SGG) co-chaired the Gordon Conference on Radiation and Climate in New London, NH, July 29-Aug. 3. Jens Redemann (BAER Institute) presented an invited talk, "Aerosol measurements from multiple instruments and platforms: what questions can be answered by combining different techniques?” Since 1931, the Gordon Conferences have provided venues for presenting and discussing research at the frontiers of science. This year's conference focused on "Integrating Multiscale Measurements and Models for Key Climate Questions". Results from NASA satellites, aircraft missions, and models were key components of many talks, including Dr. Redemann's. One hundred and thirteen scientists attended from North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia attended the conference. (POC: Phil Russell, prussell@arc.nasa.gov , 4-5404)

Hanwant Singh featured in show promoting science careers .
Hanwant Singh (SGG) was interviewed by Ebru-TV, July 30. The interview is to be part of a TV show that is being specifically designed to encourage and engage young students at the college level to consider the excitement in considering science as a career choice. Singh answered many questions that dealt with the changing atmospheric composition, instrumentation and platforms used to study the atmosphere, and the impact of pollution on climate, and included his personal reflections, as well. (POC: Hanwant Singh, Hanwant.B.Singh@nasa.gov , 4-6769)

WRAP team and Ikhana test flight .
The WRAP project team participated in a flight test of the Ikhana UAS aircraft, August 4, in preparation for the first flights of the Western States Fire Imaging Missions to be undertaken next week. The "shakedown” flights at NASA-Dryden Flight Research Center were performed with all imaging and aircraft systems performing, in preparation for flights in the National Airspace (NAS) during the science data collection missions. The Certificate of Authorization (COA) to perform the series of science missions on the UAS operating in the NAS was received last week. This is the first COA received for flights over the continental U.S. by the NASA Ikhana UAS. (POC: Vince Ambrosia, vambrosia@mail.arc.nasa.gov , 4-6565)

Rennie Selkirk interviewed for Costa Rican TV .
Rennie Selkirk (BAER Institute) gave a television interview for Costa Rican TV (Universidad de Costa Rica, Channel 15) concerning the Ticosonde and TC4 Forecasting. The program, "Espectro Ciencia y Teconologia", aired August 7. For more information on the show and Ticosonde and TC4, visit the website: http://bocachica/TC4/TC4.html . (POC: Chris Scofield, Christine.P.Scofield@nasa.gov , 4-4599)

Wired Science interviews SIERRA Team .
Chris Anderson, Executive Producer of the television show, Wired Science , interviewed members of the Ames SIERRA UAV team, Aug. 2, for an upcoming episode of the PBS series. Footage was taken of the SIERRA during an engine test outside of Hanger 211 and Matt Fladeland (Manager, Airborne Science Office) was interviewed about Earth science and UAVs. The Wired Science team also visited with staff from the RMAX and EAV programs. (POC: Matt Fladeland, Matthew.M.Fladeland@nasa.gov , 4-3325)

FireMapper camera demo at Ames .
There was a 2-day demonstration of the FireMapper, an infrared camera based on an uncooled (300K) microbolometer-array. The FireMapper is built by Space Instruments in Encinitas, CA (Dr. James Hoffman, Technical Director). As an airborne camera sensitive over the thermal infrared range from 8-12.5 microns, the FireMapper is used by the US Forest Service to monitor wildfires and help firefighter crews on the ground. An earlier version of the camera has flown on the Space Shuttle. (POC: Friedemann Freund, ffreund@mail.arc.nasa.gov , 4-5183)
