Earth Science Division Highlights for week ending June 26, 2007

SGE researchers attend ISRSE.
A number of scientists and researchers from the Biospheric Science Branch (SGE) attended the International Symposium on Remote Sensing of Environment (ISRSE) held in San Jose, Costa Rica, June 25-29.

  • Vince Ambrosia (CSUMB) presented the paper, "The Western States UAS Fire Mission: 2006 Results and 2007 Progress."
  • Steve Dunagan (SGE) and Susan Schoenung (BAERI) chaired a special session that focused on UAS utility for earth science investigations. Both presented papers at the conference: "Small UAS Technologies to Enable Earth Science Missions" (Dunagan) and "An Overview of NASA Earth Science Missions using Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS)" (Schoenung).
  • Don Sullivan (SGE) and Schoenung organized a one-day workshop, June 23, that focused on UAS utility in remote sensing. The workshop staff included Schoenung, Sullivan, Dunagan, Ambrosia, and Steve Wegener (BAERI). Over twenty participants from Latin America, the Caribbean, South America, and North America attended the workshop.
  • Liane Guild presented "NASA Airborne AVIRIS and DCS Remote Sensing of Coral Reefs" in the session focusing on marine ecosystems and monitoring coral reef and algal bloom.

Chris Potter speaks at Director's Colloquium.
Chris Potter (SGE) delivered at talk about global warming and its potential effects on the biosphere at the latest Director's Colloquium Summer Series at NASA Ames, on June 26. Potter summarized the scientific evidence for past, present, and future changes in Earth's biosphere related to global warming. He discussed the applications of satellite data analysis and computer simulation modeling at Ames to climate impact studies. (POC: Christopher Potter, Chris.Potter@nasa.gov , 4-6164)

ESPO personnel preparing for TC-4 .
NASA's Tropical, Cloud and Climate Coupling mission (TC4) is completing final preparations for its July 2-Aug 17 deployment. The TC4 science meeting was held in April and a Forecasting and Flight Planning meeting in May. Preparations of the sites in both Costa Rica and Panama are well underway for the 3 aircraft (NASA's DC-8, WB-57 and ER-2) and over 250 people expected.

Some Earth Science Project Office (ESPO) personnel left for Panama at the end of last week for the final set up of the radar and research trailer there. Additional ESPO personnel will depart in the next week to support integration of the WB-57 in Houston, DC-8 in Sacramento and ER-2 at DFRC. The first ESPO members will arrive in Costa Rica, July 2, for set up. There will be a press conference and press release from Headquarters, June 27, to kick off the mission.
