Earth Science at Ames successful proposals to the SEAC4RS solicitation

Staff from the Atmospheric Sciences Branch in the Earth Science Division at Ames led, or were collaborators on, seven of nine proposals selected and  to support the Southeast Asia Composition, Cloud, Climate Coupling Regional Study (SEAC4RS) airborne mission.  SEAC4RS, scheduled for August and September of 2012,  will address key questions regarding the influence of Asian emissions on clouds, climate, and air quality as well asfundamental satellite observability of the system. Science observations will focus specifically on the role of the Asian monsoon circulation and convective redistribution in governing upper atmospheric composition and chemistry.  NASA Ames scientists Eric Jensen, Lenny Pfister, and Hanwant Singh were selected for leadership proposals for the mission.  Jens Redemann (BAERI at Ames) was similarly selected.  In addition, three Ames airborne instruments – MMS (Paul Bui), SSFR (Warren Gore) and AATS (Phil Russel) will be part of the mission.  Ames scientist Jim Podolske is a co-I on a proposal selected from Langley – Glenn Dickins PI.

ATTREX EV-1 mission prepares for first test flight.

A NASA GlobalHawk UAV will be flown within the next week on the first science test flight for the Airborne Tropical Tropopause Experiment (ATTREX). The flight will occur from Dryden Flight Research Center.  ATTREX is a NASA Ames led Earth Venture 1 mission.  Dr. Eric Jensen is the PI.   The GlobalHawk is equipped with 12 instruments for the flight.

Western States Fire Mission had its first science flight.

A NASA B-200 aircraft equipped with the AMS sensor conducted the first flight of the Western States Fire Mission on October 18.  The mission collected data during a control burn in Henry Coe State Park in California.  Vince Ambrosia (CSUMB) is the PI for the mission.

SiVESC Cooperative Agreement Notice re-issued.

NASA Ames re-issued the Silicon Valley Earth Science Cooperative Agreement (SiVESC) call for proposals on October 18. Proposals are due November 21.
