Earth Science Division Highlights for week ending January 17, 2008

Forrest Melton delivers talk at state vector control conference.  Forrest Melton (CSUMB) gave a talk entitled "Monitoring and Modeling Environmental Conditions with the NASA Terrestrial Observation and Prediction System" at the Mosquito and Vector Control Association of California Conference in Palm Springs, Jan. 15. (POC:  Forrest Melton, 4-2787, Forrest.S.Melton@nasa.gov)

Recent publication.  A team from SGE and collaborators from the University of Montana and Utah State University published a study of an important micrometeorological variable, vapor pressure deficit, and how it relates to remotely sensed surface temperature at different resolutions.  The paper* appeared in the recent issue of Remote Sensing of the Environment.  Models constructed from such relations may provide practical information for regional mapping of vegetation productivity.

DEVELOP students’ work published in NASA Tech Brief. The article, “Processing Satellite Imagery To Detect Waste Tire Piles” was published in the December issue of NASA Tech Briefs (vol. 31, No. 12, page 26).  It is based on work DEVELOP students did in the 2005 summer session.  One of the students who worked on the project, Catherine Huybrechts, has used this technology as the base for a company she started in 2006 called "EndPoint Environmental" (www.endpointenvironmental.com).  (POC: Jay Skiles, Joseph.Skiles@nasa.gov, 4-3614)
