Earth Science Division Highlights for week ending September 19, 2007

SG staff attend SMD Airborne Science Program 5-yr. planning meeting.
The SMD Airborne Science Program held its annual 5-yr. planning meeting at NASA HQ, Sept. 13, to review future requirements for science aircraft. Matt Fladeland (SG) organized and chaired the meeting, and Steve Hipskind (Chief), Mike Craig, Mike Gaunce, and Marilyn Vasques from the ARC Earth Science Division attended. Science program managers in the NASA HQ Earth Science Division presented a number of missions that will be flown in the 2008-2012 timeframe. Presentations were also given on the Ikhana and Global Hawk UAS managed at DFRC. An updated schedule will be posted to http://airbornescience.nasa.gov, a site administered at Ames for NASA HQ. ECOSAT Group discusses ecoforecasting with Australian researchers.
The Ecological Forecasting Lab met with representatives of the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) and the Australian Bureau of Meteorology, Sept. 14, to discuss ecological forecasting and potential applications of the Terrestrial Observation and Prediction System (TOPS) for water resource management in Australia. Australia's Murray-Darling Basin is currently experiencing one of the worst droughts on record that is creating severe impacts to agriculture. CSIRO has been tasked with developing an enhanced monitoring and forecasting system to improve water management in Australia. Visiting scientists from CSIRO included Dr. Rob Vertessy, Chief Scientist (Hydrology), Bureau of Meteorology (former Chief); Dr. Stuart Minchin , Research Director, CSIRO Land and Water; Ross Ackland, Research Manager, Information Engineering Laboratory, CSIRO ICT Centre; and Mr. John Weiss, Research Scientist at the Keith Turnbull Research Institute.
