Earth Science Division Highlights for week ending June 20, 2007

SG staff discusses small satellites with Northrup-Grumann.
On June 15, the Earth Science Division hosted four visitors from Northrop Grumman's space-based Earth observation group, Brian Baldauf, Leo Andreoli, Cynthia Woo and Howard Eller. NG is very interested in pursuing a small, low cost satellite for Earth science and applications, and they presented several specific concepts. They offered the LCROSS ESPA ring as a possible bus for a future Earth System Science Pathfinder (ESSP) proposal and presented some ideas for an under $10M mission. Pete Klupar of Ames' Small Satellite Office (Code PK) participated in the discussion and the group met with Center Director Pete Worden. (POC: Steve Hipskind, 4-5076, Steve.Hipskind@nasa.gov )

IWMI Scientist delivers seminar on mapping global irrigation.
Dr. Prasad Thenkabail, Principal Researcher of the Global Research Division and Head of the Remote Sensing and GIS divisions of the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) in Sri Lanka, gave a seminar to the Biospheric Science branch (SGE), June 18. His talk, "Mapping global irrigated areas from remote sensing," details his group's work in providing comprehensive assessments of water management for agriculture. The Institute's web site ( http://www.iwmigiam.org ) provides country-by-country statistics, maps and datasets of irrigated areas and rainfed croplands throughout the world.
