Earth Science Division Highlights for January 17, 2013

• California Academy of Sciences recognizes the Ames iGEM team with new video

The California Academy of Sciences recently released a new video recognizing Ames' iGEM ( International Genetically Engineered Machine) team for its research in synthetic biology. The six minute video highlights Dr. Lynn Rothschild and the team composed of Stanford and Brown University students in the cutting edge research presented by the team during the iGEM competition. The Academy's program, "Science Today" summarized the research presented at the iGEM's America's West regional and World championships in the fall of 2012.

• ATTREX mission prepares for first science flight in 2013

Work continued this week at Dryden Flight research center to prepare the NASA Global Hawk AV-6 for the Airborne Tropical Tropopause Experiment, a NASA Earth Venture 1 mission.  ATTREX completed a combined system test (CST) with a flight on Tuesday, January 15.  Several minor issues arose with instrument and all were addressed.  A leaking nose wheel strut was replaced on January 16.  A range flight is scheduled for 1/17 to be followed by the first science flight on Friday, 1/18

• NASA AJAX project completes new science flights over Railroad Valley and Central California

The NASA/Ames Alpha Jet completed data acquisition flights on January 15 and 16.  The January 15 flight collected CO2 and ozone data over Railroad Valley Nevada and overflew ground ozone data collections sites at Warm Springs Summit and Berlin Ichthyosaur State Park (both in Nevada).  The January 16 flight was the first in collaboration with the Discover-AQ Earth Venture 1 mission in California this year.  While the NASA P-3 acquired air quality data between Palmdale and Fresno, the Alpha Jet extended the observations with a flight over the foothills of the Sierra Nevada between Placerville and Friant and over the eastern edge of the northern San Joaquin Valley.  Data from both flights is under analysis.  The Alpha Jet is scheduled to fly again on 1/18 in support of Discover-AQ.  The flight path may differ based on analysis of the data acquired on 1/16.
