NASA SCIENCE USER NETWORKS

Leslie A. Morrissey

The NASA Science User Networks (NSUN) at Ames Research Center, as part of EOSDIS, supports the development of high performance prototype networks to facilitate scientific research requiring high data rate transfers and computationally intensive modeling efforts. As stated in the charter, the primary objective of the NSUN is to design, develop, demonstrate, test, and evaluate prototype networks to facilitate access and use of EOSDIS by the scientific research community.

EOSDIS science working groups have been established to assure that science user requirements are the primary basis for the design, development and operation of EOSDIS. The NSUN working group (NSUNWG) will provide scientific oversight, guidance, and requirements for the development, implementation, and operation of the NSUN. The NSUNWG will provide a focal point for the direct interaction with the scientific research community regarding developments within the NSUN. The topics and issues for which the NSUNWG will be responsible include:

Members of the NSUNWG were drawn from the scientific, technical, and government communities. The working group is comprised of:

The NSUNWG has held three meetings to date. The first meeting concerned the charter. The second meeting was focused on a review of the Hughes User Model with special regard for networking elements. The third meeting reviewed network prototyping plans and requirements. The minutes for all meetings are available. A fourth meeting is scheduled for mid-1995.
