Cholera Characteristics

Infectious agent: Vibrio cholerae

Transmission: Through ingestion of vibrio-contaminated water, food

Reservoir: Zooplankton; outbreaks have been associated with phytoplankton blooms, which follow increases in sea surface temperatures and nutrient levels; it is hypothesized that the vibrios that are attached in a dormant state to zooplankton become active in warmer waters and are then carried by currents and tides to areas of human habitation

Occurrence (1997)

Cholera Distribution
Occurrence key: yellow = low, orange = medium, and red = high
