Unmanaged Pasture
This image represents a typical unmanaged pasture in the Tapachula study
area. Because these pastures are not cultivated by farmers, they are usually
hummocky and invaded by shrubs and small trees. The herbaceous cover is
dominated by species that indicate flooding, such as aquatic grasses
(Hymenachne spp., Brachiaria spp., and Echinochloa spp.),
cattails (Typha),
and sedges (Cyperaceae family). The presence of ponds and bloodmeals (i.e.,
cattle) makes this landscape element important to mosquitoes for feeding and
larval habitat.
