Transitional Swamp
This image represents a typical transitional swamp in the Tapachula study
area. This landscape element consists of a seasonally flooded open forest,
located on the upland edge of mangrove forest. Flooding occurs during the
beginning of the rainy season, when storm runoff is backed up behind coastal
sand bars. Once the sand bars are breached, flooding is reduced to
ponding, which
provides potential larval habitat for mosquitoes. The vegetation consists of
sedges (Cyperaceae family), grasses (Jouvea spp.), and broadleaved
halophytes (Batis spp. and Sesuvium spp.).
