Pak. Keen To Invite India To Lahore Meet

ISLAMABAD, JUNE 9

Pakistan is planning to invite arch-rivals India for a nine-nation hockey tournament to be held in Lahore in December. "We had been asked by the ministry what would be the appropriate time for a resumption of Pakistan-India hockey series and we told them that the first opportunity would be to invite them over to Lahore for the tournament," secretary of the Pakistan Hockey Federation Brig. Govt Clears Pak Business Team Visit

New Delhi , June 9

The track II diplomacy between India and Pakistan will be revived later this month, with the holding of the third meeting of the India-Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IPCCI) in New Delhi on June 28 and 29.

The meeting would take up Pakistan's proposal to accord the most favoured nation (MFN) status to India and other issues, including infrastructural bottlenecks, informal trade, movement of goods, capital and people between the two countries and low volume of bilateral trade.

The 40-member Pakistani delegation to the two-day meeting would be led by IPCCI President Slyas Ahmed Billour (Senator) and co-led by Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry President Riaz Ahmed Tata.

The Ministry of External Affairs has approved the delegation's visit to India for attending the meet, a press note by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) said on Monday.

The MEA has assured FICCI that it would grant visas to all Pakistani businessmen willing to join this delegation.

IPCCI was formed jointly by FICCI and the Pakistani business chamber in April 1999 after the maiden bus ride of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to Lahore.

Bilateral trade between India and Pakistan is extraordinarily low at less than one per cent of their global trade.

In 1997-98, the total exports of Pakistan into India was l.05 per cent of their total exports and the total imports of Pakistan from India was 1.53 per cent of their total imports.

This increased to 2.39per cent and 1.63 per cent respectivelyin 1998-99 and thereafter reduced substantially to 0.54 per cent and 1.81 per cent in 2001-02.

In 1948-49, 56 per cent of Pakistan's total exports were directed to the Indian market and 32 per cent of its imports came from India.

India in principle granted MFN treatment to Pakistan in 1995-96 and has no list of permitted or forbidden products, whereas Pakistan has not extended normal WTO rights or the MFN to India, but maintains a "permissible list" of 600 items that may be legally imported from India.

An analysis of the permissible items show that most of them are chemicals, minerals and metal products.

Some of these items like cardamom, tea and tyres invite a high tariff of more than 50 per cent. Most finished products and white goods are not part of this list.

A high potential for bilateral trade exists in two-wheelers, cars, consumer durables, drugs and pharmaceuticals, diesel engines, cement, automotive parts and textile machinery.
