Tutorial #1
Conducting Queries on Carbon Data using an Existing Boundary Layer
Tutorial Description:
The following tutorial explains the navigation steps necessary to conduct a query on Live Leaf Carbon values in Ness County, Kansas. This tutorial begins by explaining the basic steps to navigation in the CQUEST Map Viewer. This tutorial also demonstrates the use of the Zoom, Query, and Buffer tools.
Step 1 - Log-In
Step 1 - Log-In Begin by logging in and entering the CQUEST Viewer. Wait for the default US Map to completely load before navigating in the viewer. The map load is complete when the large US map in the appears in the 'Map Window'. < View Result >
Step 2 - Activating Layers
Go to the Layer / Legend / Metadata panel and click on the Boundaries layer group and the Carbon Data layer group. Notice that each layer group has several layers organized under each layer group. Under the Boundaries layer group the States layer is highlighted in 'blue' and the checkbox is marked. Also notice that the Live Leaf Carbon layer is also checked but not highlighted. The blue highlighting means that the States layer is the active layer. Any queries conducted will query the active layer exclusively.
Note: Only one layer may be active at a time.
Click on the Live Leaf Carbon layer text under the Carbon Data layer group to change it to the active layer. The Live Leaf Carbon layer text should now be highlighted in cyan and the text window (below the Map Window) should display the following: Live Leaf Carbon (g C m^2) is now the Active Layer. < View Result >
Step 3 - Using the Zoom-In Tool
Notice that the Zoom In tool is already selected in the Toolbar panel. Use the Zoom-In tool to zoom-in on the state of Kansas. This can be done by drawing a rectangular box, with the Zoom In tool, around Kansas.
Note: You can also zoom by clicking on the map. The default zoom for a click is 2x magnification. Notice that the Overview Map denotes the region that is visible in the Map Window after zooming.
< View Result >
Step 4 - Finding Ness County, Kansas
To further narrow our view to Ness County, Kansas start by making the Boundary layer, Counties visible. Click the Counties text to make it the active layer. Click the refresh button below the group layers to initiate the changes to the visible/active layers. < View Result >
Step 5 - Using the Query Tool
We are now interested in finding Ness County, Kansas. To do this we will use the Query tool. Select the query tool from the Toolbar Panel. Notice that the query window has appeared below the Map Window. To query the county layer for the location of Ness County do the following.
  • Select the County field from the field drop down menu.
  • Select the "=" operator from the operator field drop down menu.
  • Type "Ness County" in the Value field. < View Result >
  • Scroll down and click the "Create Query String" button.
  • The SQL query County = "Ness County" is now entered below the "Create Query String" button.
    < View Result >
  • Click the "Execute" button and Ness County will be highlighted in the Map Window. Notice that a table of attributes for Ness County appears below the Map Window. You can now use the Zoom-In tool to zoom-in to Ness County, or just click on the first cell value Rec = "1". The "Rec" column is the resulting record values from your query search for "Ness County". < View Result >
Step 6 - Setting the Buffer Region
Now we will create a buffered region using the Ness County selection to query the Live Leaf Carbon in Ness County, Kansas. Select the Buffer tool from the toolbar panel with the Ness County boundary selected and the Counties layer visible and active. Notice that the window below the Map Window has changed to the Buffer options for the existing Ness County selection. In the Buffer window select Highlight features from "Live Leaf Carbon" within a distance of "0" KILOMETERS around the selected features of Counties. Check the box next to "Display Attributes". Click the "Create Buffer" button. < View Result >
Step 7 - Save / Print Results
To copy and save all of the selected Live Leaf Carbon values in your selection, right click in the attribute table region and "Select All", "Copy", and "Paste" the data into either Microsoft Excel or a Microsoft Word document. To print the results right click in the attribute table region and select "Print".
To print a map with legend, use the "Clear" button located in the toolbar panel to clear any selections. Click the Legend tool in the toolbar panel to toggle the layer display to the legend display. Select the "Print"tool from the toolbar panel. Type a name for your map in the Print Map window below the Map Window. Click on "Create Print Page" to open a new Browser window with the Map Image, Overview Map Image, and Legend displayed. You can then use the File/Print menu item to send the display to your printer or Save As a webpage for later printing. < View Result >
