AIRDAS: Flood Monitoring
in the Central Valley of California

In response to the Office of Emergency Services, the Ames Lear jet and the Airborne Infrared Disaster Assessment System (AIRDAS) were flown to test and evaluate a multispectral scanner system and telemetry data link for real-time flood assessment.

The system was able to detect:

  • areas of inundation
  • failures in the levee system
  • potential levee failures (supersaturated soils adjacent to dykes)
This data will be used by OES to determine the damage and impact of the floods on urban, commercial, and agricultural areas.
