In response to the Office of Emergency Services, the Ames
Lear jet and the Airborne Infrared Disaster Assessment System (AIRDAS) were
flown to test and evaluate a multispectral scanner system and telemetry
data link for real-time flood assessment.
The system was able to detect:
- areas of inundation
- failures in the levee system
- potential levee failures (supersaturated soils adjacent to dykes)
This data will be used by OES to determine the damage and impact of the floods on
urban, commercial, and agricultural areas.
