Earth Science Division Highlights for August 2013

Upcoming Program Milestones
(From the week of August 20)

  • Hurricane and Severe Storm Sentinel (HS3) mission: First science flight August 20.

  • Studies of Emissions and Atmospheric Composition Clouds, and Climate Coupling by Regional Surveys (SEAC4RS): Science flights continuing with the DC-8 & ER-2; 200+ people in the field at JSC/Ellington

Significant Announcements:

  • HS3 announcements:
    • AV1 deployed to WFF on 8/13
    • AV6 deployed to WFF on 8/15
    • Both landings controlled by GHOC-East at WFF
  • Steve Wegener, a former employee at Ames and a major promoter of UAVs for Earth science, died while on a trip to Alaska.
  • Key Meetings/Event and Attendees:

    • Steve Hipskind met with Steve Zornetzer and the ARC directors August 16 to review the role of Ames in UAVs for NASA. An update on the program will be made to Pete Worden within the next two weeks.

    • The Earth Science Division at Ames briefed Randy Richards, staff member to Congressman Cramer (R NDak) emphasizing UAV work. The briefing included a tour of the hanger and the UAVs at Ames.

    • Bob Gibson, director of the NPP program at ORAU, discussed program updates with the code S division chiefs on August 20 and gave a presentation to the program participants and managers.

    Upcoming Program Milestones
    (From the week of August 26)

    • Hurricane and Severe Storm Sentinel (HS3) mission:
      • 8/24-25: AV6 Science Flight #2, target Saharan Air Layer and remnants of 24L.
      • AV1 remains ready for its first science flight.

    • Studies of Emissions and Atmospheric Composition Clouds, and Climate Coupling by Regional Surveys (SEAC4RS): Science flights continuing with the DC-8 & ER-2 on August 30; 200+ people in the field at JSC/Ellington

    Significant Announcements:

    • HS3 announcements:
      • 8/20-21: AV6 Science Flight #1 successful, duration 25.1 hours, target Saharan Air Layer and remnants of ErinAV6 deployed to WFF on 8/15
      • Both landings controlled by GHOC-East at WFF.
    • SEAC4RS announcements:
      • DC-8 flights on August 26 and 27 included overflight of the RIM Fire in Yosemite. ER-2 flight cancelled due to rain.

      Key Meetings/Event and Attendees:

      • Steve Hipskind visited the HS3 operations at Wallops on 8/28.
      • Allison Leidner, (NASA HQ/USRA) will be at Ames on Monday, October 21, and meet with SG staff to discuss the latest from HQ on the National Climate Assessment and Ecological Forecasting focus area in earth science. (11:00am – N232/227)
