Earth Science Division Highlights for week ending March 19, 2008
Liane Guild attends meetings of U.S. Coral Reef Task Force and Ocean Sciences
Liane Guild (SGE) represented NASA at the U.S. Coral Reef Task Force Meeting in Washington, D.C., February 26-28. Celebrating 10 years of accomplishment and recognizing 2008 as the International Year of the Reef, the Task Force addressed remaining challenges for studying, managing, and conserving U.S. coral reefs particularly as they are affected by climate change. Dignitaries attending the Task Force Meeting included Governor Tulafono of American Samoa, Governor Camancho of Guam, and President Remengesau of the Republic of Palau. The activities for the International Year of the Reef are raising awareness of and threats to coral reefs. Guild is also participating in the Task Force's Climate Change Working Group that is discussing strategies to address climate change effects on coral reefs.
On March 3-7, Guild attended the 2008 Ocean Sciences Meeting ( AGU /ASLO/ TOS ) in Orlando, Florida. She gave an oral presentation entitled, “Coral Reef Ecosystem Assessment Using NASA Airborne AVIRIS and DCS Imagery” in the session on Operational Oceanography: Assimilation, Modeling, and Applications in Coastal/Estuarine Ecosystems and Living Marine Resources. NASA Program Manager Woody Turner co-chaired the session.

Phil Russell delivers invited talks
Phil Russell ( SGG ) gave two invited talks. The first, "Narrowing the Uncertainty in Aerosol Radiative Forcing by Combining Suborbital and Satellite Measurements in Interagency/International Field Programs," was the invited keynote talk at the Dept. of Energy's Atmospheric Science Program Annual Science Team Meeting, held Feb. 25 in Annapolis MD. The second invited talk, “ARCTAS (Arctic Research on the Composition of the Troposphere using Aircraft and Satellites) in Relation to ISDAC (Indirect and Semi-Direct Aerosol Campaign), was delivered at the Dept. of Energy's ISDAC Science Team Meeting, held Feb. 28, in Ottawa. (POC: Phil Russell, Philip.B.Russell@nasa.gov, 4-5404)
Dave Bubenheim attends USDA meetings
Dave Bubenheim (SGE) traveled to Reno, Nevada, Feb. 19-21, to participate in The Great Basin Workshop sponsored by Univ. of Nevada, Reno's Great Basin Environmental Project and Dr. David Thawley, Dean, College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources. On March 7, Bubenheim participated in a meeting to discuss USDA's Hydrology Modeling, which was held at USDA's Reno Laboratory. The topic of discussion was NASA Ecosystem analysis of rangelands in conjunction with USDA's Conservation Effects Assessment Project (CEAP). (POC: Dave Bubenheim, David.L.Bubenheim@nasa.gov, 4-3209)
