Earth Science Division Highlights for week ending December 5, 2007

Tony Strawa appointed to Green Ribbon Committee.  Dr. Anthony W. Strawa (SGG) was appointed to the Sunnyvale Green Ribbon Committee, Nov. 30.  The purpose of the committee is to provide recommendations to the city council on how Sunnyvale can best meet its obligations under the U.S. Mayor's Climate Protection Agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 7% below 1990 emission levels by 2012. SG Staff attend Wildfire Initiative workshop.  Jim Brass (Chief, SGE), Vince Ambrosia (CSUMB), Gailynne Bouret (BAER Institute), and Ed Sheffner (Deputy Chief, SG), traveled to Pasadena, CA, to attend the Wildfire Initiative workshop held at CalTech University, Nov. 28-29.  The workshop, convened at the request of NASA Program Manager Steve Ambrose, focused on post-fire assessment of the areas affected by recent fires in Southern California.  Attendees included representatives from other federal and state agencies:  USFS, DHS, FEMA, Air National Guard, CA Parks and Recreation, San Diego County Emergency Services.  The objective of the meeting was to develop a set of recommendations that NASA can use, in partnership with other agencies, in determining necessary requirements to improve disaster decision support, and to plan flight missions for data collection for use in post-fire assessment, investigations, and recovery.  An additional goal is to provide recommendations for future research investments and operation readiness.  A final report and recommendations are in development for delivery to senior NASA management.  (POC: Jim Brass, James.A.Brass@nasa.gov, 4-5232)
