Earth Science Division Highlights for week ending May 30, 2007

Steve Hipskind participates in CCST .
Steve Hipskind (Chief, Code SG) participated in the California Council on Science and Technology (CCST) meeting in Sacramento, May 23-24. CCST is a science and technology advisory panel to the state that meets three times a year to discuss important state issues. This year's topic was climate change and the state's response with regard to observational needs, mitigation, and adaptation strategies. Dr. Charles Kennel, former NASA AA for Earth Science and current Director of the UCSD Environment and Sustainability Initiative and Distinguished Professor of Atmospheric Sciences at Scripps, delivered the keynote speech. John Garamendi, State Lt. Governor, kicked off the Wednesday evening program. Hipskind participated in two panel discussions: one on the scientific issues of regional climate change, and the other a discussion of the observational needs for regional climate change and whether California should consider launching its own Earth observing satellite. SGG PI's proposals selected for CloudSat and CALIPSO:
Proposals submitted by Katja Drdla and Eric Jensen to the ROSES 2005 CloudSat and CALIPSO Science Team and Modeling/Analysis of A-Train Related Data were selected in a recent announcement (May 22, 2007) by NASA HQ. Additionally, the proposal by Jens Redemann of the Bay Area Environmental Research (BAER) Institute was chosen for funding. In all, 40 out of 120 proposals were selected. This NRA element supports scientific investigations that contribute to the analysis and modeling of CALIPSO, CloudSat, and A-Train data toward the goal of improved understanding of clouds and aerosols in the Earth System. SGG PIs and proposals are as follows:

  • Katja Drdla, “Modeling of Polar Stratospheric Clouds (PSCs) for CALIPSO”
  • Eric Jensen, “Modeling and analysis of CloudSat/CALIPSO measurements to understand aerosols, clouds, and water vapor in the tropics and subtropics”
  • Jens Redemann, “CALIPSO/A-Train observation and modeling: Vertical structure of aerosol radiative effects”

Sandia National Laboratories personnel visited Earth Science Division .
Representatives from the Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore visited the Earth Science Division, May 24, to discuss technology development and collaborative opportunities. They were members of the Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (ARM-UAV) program that utilized UAVs as platforms for atmospheric research beginning in 1993. They gave a seminar presenting a brief history of the ARM-UAV program and described the sensors, payload, and operational technologies that they have developed. Earth Science Division personnel gave them a tour of the UAV Collaborative, the SIERRA Unmanned Aerial System (UAS), and the Airborne Science and Technology Laboratory. (POC: Warren Gore, 4-5533,

JGR publishes paper on tropospheric ozone over Indian Ocean.
Robert Chatfield (SGG, Lead Author) and Hong Guan (BAER Institute) are co-authors of the paper, “Mechanisms for the intraseasonal variability of tropspheric oazone over the Indian Ocean during winter monsoon,” published in the Journal of Geophysical Research *. The paper connects different views of tropospheric ozone from NASA's Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer and Southern Hemisphere Additional Ozonesonde network instruments. (POC: Bob Chatfield, 4-5490,

Collaborative study of ground level ozone pollution presented at Border 2012 national meeting.
Vance Fong, researcher with the Environmental Protection Agency's Region 9, presented work done in collaboration with Robert Chatfield (SGG) at the Fourth Annual Meeting of Border 2012's National Coordinators held in San Antonio, Texas, May 22-24. The presentation, “Ground Level Ozone Pollution Based on Satellite Observations and Surface Monitoring in Support of US-Mexico Border 2012 Program,” was based on data derived from instruments measuring tropospheric NO 2 and tropospheric ozone estimates obtained from the Aura satellite.

Border 2012 is a 10-year, bi-national environmental program for the U.S./Mexico border region. This partnership of federal, state, and local governments in the U.S. and Mexico, and with U.S. border tribes is designed to protect the environment and public health in the border region consistent with the principles of sustainable development.
