Earth Science Division Highlights for week ending April 4, 2007

NPP Candidate gives seminar on modeling smoke plumes
Rebecca Matichuk, a graduate student of Dr. Brian Toon at University of Colorado, Boulder, and a NASA Post-doc Program (NPP) candidate, gave a seminar to the Ames community, April 2. Her topic, "Modeling the Transport and Optical Properties of Biomass Burning: smoke plumes and comparisons to observations," discussed her work/investigations into aerosol source functions, and the evolution and optical properties of biomass burning smoke plumes. She also discussed biomass burning research with the Earth Science Division personnel. (POC: Warren Gore, 4-5533, Warren.Gore@nasa.gov)

ESPO Team Members on Site Survey Visit
To plan and prepare for upcoming Earth Science field campaigns the Ames Earth Science Project Office (ESPO) is conducting several site survey visits. For this summer's Tropical Composition, Cloud and Climate Coupling (TC4) experiment, Marilyn Vasques and Mike Gaunce are visiting San Jose, Costa Rica and Panama to make final preparation. Kent Shiffer is in Kiruna, Sweden to evaluate the site as a base for the 2008 Arctic Research of the Composition of the Troposphere from Aircraft and Satellites (ARCTAS) experiment. Ames Aerosol Lab Took Delivery of SBIR-funded Instrument
The Ames Aerosol Lab took delivery of a unique instrument capable of measuring aerosol radiative properties from Uninhabited Aerial Systems (UAS). This project is collaboration between NASA Ames Aerosol Lab and Los Gatos Research, Inc. and is funded by the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. The instrument is capable of measuring aerosol extinction and scattering coefficients at two wavelengths, and obtaining absorption coefficient, single scattering albedo, and asymmetry parameter at these wavelengths. This instrument will be very useful in determining the vertical distribution of aerosol optical properties that are critical to accurate climate modeling. (POC: Anthony Strawa, 4-3437, Anthony.W.Strawa@nasa.gov)
